Puppers

Puppers the wonderdog

Puppers was our first Yorkie mutt. Puppers was the coolest little dog I have ever owned. I will tell you how smart and loving she was. It seems like every day held a new surprise living with her. We got Puppers from a friend that just let her Yorkie bitch run wild out in hippy town, Takilma, Oregon. Rumor has it that Mom was seen shagging it with a pure bred Lhasa apso.  One thing for sure is Puppers had more than her share of personality and brains from the union. When we first got Puppers we already had a small Pomeranian named Lupe and she was the perfect and prettiest little critter on earth. It was a standing joke around our house that Lupe was "Gina Lollobrigida" and Puppers was Phyllis Diller.

It took Puppers about two hours and she was running our household, Yorkies are like that. I don't think Lupe ever forgave us for getting another dog even though we got Puppers under the pretense that Lupe needed a friend. Where Lupe, a kennel dog, was completely alien to the idea of affection Puppers was pure love. She loved to snuggle up under my chin and just bask in love and affection.

When Puppers was about 3 months old I decided I would teach her to fetch the little plastic hamburger toy Judi bought for her. I threw the burger across the living room and told her to "fetch". She ran right over and picked it up and brought it over to me but would not give it to me. I decided to ignore her and read the paper. A short while later Puppers started to bark and run around in circles like she wanted something.  I figured she wanted to play "fetch" and Looked for the burger. I noticed it under the edge of the sofa.  I picked it up and threw it across the room. Puppers promptly ran and got it and then disappeared. I went back to reading the paper. Again she barked and ran around in circles.  This time Puppers just looked at me like I was a fool or something as I spent over a half of hour looking everywhere until I found the burger behind the Couch.  I threw it again, as she fetched it I pretended not to watch her but after much subterfuge I saw her get up on the other couch and  drop the burger behind it. I went right to it and threw it again. This time She just sat and waited until she was sure I was not looking and then she disappeared. A little later the barking and running  in circles  started. About an hour later I had expanded my search to the whole house and finally found the burger inside a partially opened dresser drawer in the bedroom.

I'm sure Puppers was laughing her little tail off knowing that she had taught me to "fetch". And indeed she did. Who says you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.

Wait until you read about her career of having puppies. Coming soon.

Yorkies are like no other dog you have ever seen. They really relate to you and demand an intimate relationship. A very loving bond soon develops. You also soon  realize that you really love these little dogs so much you cannot even stand the thought that they will eventually die someday. I reasoned that I must have more of them so when they die the mourning over their loss would not be so severe. So we decided to bred Nell.  Nell had very beautiful pups and we were all impressed, all except Puppers that is.. Jasmine was the first one of Nell's puppies and we kept her. Puppers, seeing the grand relationship Nell and Jasmine were having, longed for motherhood. Puppers got so depressed and was so sad about this issue we decided to take a chance and bred her also.

We bred Nell, (Puppers sister), and Puppers at the same time but to different studs. Generally when two bitches live together they come into heat about the same time. Well everything looked fine. When whelping time came Puppers came into labor first. One thing you soon learn breeding Yorkies is when labor starts it is usually about 5:00 P.M. on Friday as soon as the Vet closes. Well Puppers started about 2:30 A.M. Saturday morning and labored until our Vet opened at 8:00. It was a frightful night worrying about our beloved little doggie. Thank God for the Vet being open on Saturday.  As it turned out Puppers had only one giant puppy and it was breached, coming out butt first. After so much time in the birth canal the puppy was near death. The Vet and I gently worked on pulling the puppy out for about a half an hour and finally it came out and it was dead. At least we saved Puppers. Puppers was not at all a happy camper about the events. Her joy about being with child quickly turned to terror as she began to search for her puppy.

Puppers would look at me with her pleading eyes asking "where is my baby?" She frantically looked everywhere and then started screaming, sounding like a human being. This went on all day long, Puppers searching and screaming. That evening Nell started to give birth to her litter.

Everything went smoothly and the first puppy was a 3oz girl. As Nell was having her second puppy I took the first one and put it in Puppers whelping nest-box.  For what seemed like the 400th time Puppers looked her box, as I was watching, Puppers jumped into the box and wrapped her arms around her baby like she would never let go and settled into the motherly routine of licking and nursing her new found baby. It was a moment I will never forget. I did not see Puppers leave the box for three days, loving her baby the whole time. Puppers had fulfilled her purpose in life and you could see her joy on her face.  Nell had three more puppies and seemed to agree that giving Puppers one of them was a good idea.

There is more to this story but it turn tragic so beware.
